We over estimate the need for large swaths of free time to work on our projects and we under estimate how much we can get done in small, but numerous chunks of time.

We sit in inactivity, waiting for the promise of a week, a month, a year of free time to finally get us into a new project or back into something we have not touched for awhile. Give up waiting. Large swaths of unbroken time hasn’t been there for you in the past and it sure ain’t coming.

Instead, get started with what you have: you have numerous chunks of time waiting to be picked up and used to fuel your creative projects. You will find it early in the morning, after work, waiting at the airport, at lunch, riding the bus, cutting back on TV, passing up reading magazines, and many other places. They are found in 10, 15, and 30 minute blocks.

This week, make note of these chunks. Is there a regular pattern of chunk time you can start to program with creative work?

Once you have found the chunks, “mini-task” by finding a few small things you can do in those short time periods. Take a bigger creative task and keep reducing it down into logical pieces until you have several that can be mini-tasks. Grab your chunks and get your work done. Be in for a surprise: you will find that you can get more done in these small chunks that you ever thought was possible. What you assumed would take an hour to complete gets done in a concentrated burst of 15 minutes or in two chunks.

Stop waiting for something that never comes and start looking for what lies at your feet.

  1. Hello there, I think your website could possibly be having internet browser compatibility issues.
Whenever I look at your site in Safari, it looks fine but
when opening in Internet Explorer, it’s got some overlapping issues. I simply wanted to provide you with a quick heads up! Other than that, wonderful site!

  2. I’m now not certain the place you’re getting
your information, but good topic. I needs to spend some time finding
out more or understanding more. Thank you for great info I
used to be in search of this info for my mission.
